In 1972 Donny Osmond released Puppy Love and I was sure he had written it for me. A few years later still swooning about him, my Grandma announced that Grandad had met Donny at 'the club' and he had in fact said he loved me and was sending a specially signed autograph as proof.
I was ecstatic and bragged at school so much, that the headmaster conducted a whole assembly around my signed autograph, which had arrived in the post. I was asked to bring it to the front to show to everyone. I did, beaming with smug pride, a little confused by the headteacher's reaction but put that down to jealousy- he looked the type...
Years later I was clearing out my box of treasure, when I came across a piece of a Kelloggs Cornflake box with a picture cut out of the newspaper of Donny Osmond stuck on it with, now yellowing cellotape and in my Granny's hand writing the words 'To Susan with all my love for ever- Donny xxx' Hmm....
I have been asked recently what inspired me to come up with the Owd Lasses...well it was stunts like this I suppose, bittersweet moments that defined my youth.
